1. We all know that cheap alcohol in supermarkets is having severe consequences for the NHS The rising cost of treatment due to widespread alcohol abuse as well as crime and disorder. Why won’t labour introduce a minimum unit price 50p as recommended by the chief medical office and other health experts? [Mary, via email]

We are determined to take action to tackle binge drinking in our towns and cities but we are also clear that we will not take action which impacts unfairly on the majority of responsible drinkers. A minimum unit price would risk doing that. So we are acting to get rid of the things which do directly contribute to binge drinking – banning irresponsible promotions like speed drinking competitions, ensuring that in pubs and clubs people are offered a choice of drink sizes and of course we are cracking down on anyone selling alcohol to children.
