Dental program aids kids Dentistry IQ

POCATELLO --In the process of applying fluoride to a young boy's teeth Tuesday afternoon at the Lincoln Early Childhood Center, Shandee Browning flagged a problem. "You do have a little cavity in there. Kind of a bigger one," she informed the child.

Then Browning alerted the school's health manager , Sherry Deiter, of the discovery. Deiter will notify the parents.

Browning was among a group of graduating Idaho State University dental hygiene students who made a special trip to administer fluoride to the Lincoln students. They provide the service free of charge to Lincoln three times per year as part of their community outreach efforts, explained Jacque Freudenthal, assistant professor of dental hygiene.

Within moments, the dental hygienists had treated the entire class. Freudenthal said 100 percent of the parents in that Head Start program classroom had signed permission slips for their children to be treated, thanks largely to the influence of Deiter.
