Raising two pets -- Millie, an 11-year-old bichon frise, and Melvin, a 5-month-old miniature dachshund -- in a recession with only a fixed income requires ingenuity and creativity. Sandra Miller-McKeen of Joliet has both.For routine pet health care and her own dental work, Miller-McKeen travels to Ohio, where prices are cheaper, even after paying for gasoline.
"In Ohio, everything is half price or less because the area can't support higher prices," Miller-McKeen said. "
Although Miller-McKeen combines vet visits with trips to see a friend, cutting her dogs' hair and trimming their nails at home as well as fixing little issues before they progress to major concerns are some of the best money-savers Miller-Mckeen suggests.
"I brush their teeth three times a week to prevent tooth problems and take care of hot spots before they get out of hand," Miller-Mckeen said. "For eight years I washed my dog once a month to rid her of fleas, and it worked like a charm. Last year was the first time I had to buy Frontline, and that was because she was getting ticks, which never happened before."
