Benefits of Dental Insurance
The minimal cost of dental insurance more than pays for itself even if the member only utilizes his or her plan for preventive care. Most plans offer 3 tiers of coverage. The first tier is coverage for preventive care (cleanings, exams and x-rays twice a year). The second tier is basic care (fillings and extractions) and the third tier is coverage for major dental care (crowns, bridges and dentures). Depending upon the insurance carrier and the plan selected, endodontics (root canals) may fall under either basic or major care.
Most plans offer a $1,000 maximum annual benefit; however, when receiving care from a network dentist, the member receives discounts which stretch the maximum benefit. For example, if a member has a filling which costs $400 and the insurance carrier only allows $300, his policy would reimburse the coinsurance on $300 and the dentist would have to write off $100, saving the member money out of his pocket as well his benefit dollars left for the year.
Dental insurance is an affordable benefit that an employer may offer to entice perspective employees. Some insurance carriers also offer voluntary dental policies in which the employee may elect coverage and have the premium payroll deducted with pre-tax dollars. Because dental insurance applications do not require underwriting, the rates are firm upon quoting.
Although some insurance carriers offer dental policies to individuals, members can expect waiting periods for most basic and major services. Group dental insurance is usually less expensive than individual dental insurance and typically has no waiting periods for procedures.
