Not-for-profit health directors pay adds up Buffalo Business First

Agreeing to serve on a nonprofit’s board of directors often means a pledge of time, effort and, very likely, a financial commitment.

Receiving a paycheck is rarely part of the deal.

But that’s exactly what people can expect when they accept a nomination to serve on the board of a nonprofit health insurer. More than 50 local individuals served on the boards of HealthNow NY Inc. / BlueCross BlueShield of WNY; Excellus Health Plan/ Univera Healthcare ; and Independent Health , receiving collective compensation of $964,457.

According to annual reports filed with the state Department of Insurance, board members at the three major insurers in Western New York received compensation ranging from $400 to $114,475. Besides the 51 individuals from the Buffalo area, those listed included dozens from different parts of the state and country where HealthNow and Excellus and its parent, Lifetime Healthcare Cos., have operations.
