Dentistry is one of the most well-paid, young (more than half of all dentists are in their 20s and 30s) and progressive professions in the UK. Graduating dentists have to do one yearÕs (full-time) or two yearsÕ (part-time) vocational training and immediately earn salaries of £24,108 pa (pro rata if over two years). Vocational training involves working in general practice under the guidance of a dentist and attending courses weekly.
Once they have completed their time as vocational dental practitioners, dentists receive a health authority number and can earn almost what they want Ñ the only limits are their skills and the time they are prepared to commit to their careers. Almost three-quarters of graduates choose to go into general dental practice, although the career pathway could take them into hospital or community dentistry and the Armed Forces.
For dentists committed to the National Health Service, net earnings are about £55,000pa according to the most recent survey by the Review Body on DoctorsÕ and DentistsÕ Remuneration. Dentists who offer private treatment are able to set their own fees. However, most dentists begin their careers with a considerable debt burden.
A recent survey by the British Dental Association found that the average student debt is £10,700 (a 10.3 per cent increase on the previous year) incurred during the five year course. Students are required to be at university for up to 45 weeks of the year (compared to 30 weeks for other disciplines) so it is difficult for them to work part-time and in the holidays.
The career structure for general dental practitioners is rapidly changing and developing. Most choose to join practices as associates and then either buy or set up their own practices. Some may now choose to join organisations such as the high street retail pharmacy chain Boots which now runs in-store and independent practices....
