&Mdash; A Pompano Beach woman respected for her 50 years of volunteer service at Holy Cross Hospital died after a two-car crash Friday morning outside the facility, her family and police said.Lorelei Pelaia, 91, was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, said her son, Ralph Pelaia, 61, of Longview, Texas.
"She was the most unselfish person I've ever met," her son said. "She was always involved with Holy Cross. That hospital was her home. That was really her family."
Lorelei Pelaia was longtime chairwoman for the Pink Lady Thrift Shop at Holy Cross, helping oversee the business as it relocated three times over the years and grew from raising $40,000 to more than $130,000 annually, hospital officials said.
Pelaia likely was headed there when her car and another vehicle collided at about 8:40 a.m. in the 4800 block of North Federal Highway, also known as U.S. 1.
